Phu Soi Dao sits in Nam Pat district, Uttaradit, right on the Thai–Lao border. The highlight is Lan Son, a meadow of three-needle pines at 1,633 m: open pine forest on wide grassy slopes, mist drifting through almost all day in the rainy season, and purple wildflowers everywhere.

The trail isn't long, but it's steep nearly the whole way, through rain, steep slopes, steps and plenty of tired legs. Once you reach the meadow, you'll understand why so many people want to come here at least once.

    Day 1

    Five hills to the meadow

We reach the park in the morning, register, weigh gear for the porters and pay the trash deposit, then start walking from Phu Soi Dao Waterfall. The first part is humid rainforest along a stream, then steep climbs alternate with flatter stretches. It's 6.5 km and takes about 4–6 hours.

    • The five hills: Song Yat, Prap Sian, Pa Ko, Suea Khrong, and finally "Death Hill" just before the meadow
    • In the rainy season the trail is muddy and slippery, with many sections of steps. Trekking poles help a lot
    • Bring lunch to eat on a break; you can buy it at the market before the park
    • At the meadow, pitch your tent and wander the flower fields. Dinner tonight is shabu, made by our team

    Day 2

Morning mist, then the long way down

Wake up to mist drifting through the pines, take photos in the wildflower fields or visit Than Son Waterfall, then pack up and hike 6.5 km back down the same trail. It's less tiring than the climb, but hard on the knees.

    • Breakfast is on your own. Instant noodles or something simple works well
    • Return rented buckets and scoops, carry your trash down and collect your deposit at the bottom

    FAQ

How hard is it? Can beginners come?

Moderate. The 6.5 km climb is steep most of the way, over five hills, and takes about 4–6 hours. Beginners can do it with a steady pace, regular breaks and a porter for the heavy gear.

When do the purple flowers bloom?

From about late July to late September, densest in August and September. It rains often then, so bring a rain jacket and a pack cover.

Can I buy food on the meadow?

Yes: omelette rice (60 THB), drinks (Coke 30 THB), cup noodles, plus buckets for rent at 20 THB/night and scoops at 10 THB/night. There's no electricity, and the charging station isn't working yet.

    Can I hire a porter?

Yes, at 30 THB per kg, weighed at the park office before you start. Your gear reaches the meadow when you do.

Can we climb to the summit too?

This trip camps on the meadow only. The summit (2,102 m) is about 3 km further, opens only in the cool season, requires a park guide and needs an extra day.

    Can I cancel?

Cancel 15 days or more before departure for a 100% refund or credit toward a future trip. Under 15 days we can't refund, but you can send someone in your place.
